During my BA years as an English-Romanian philology student, I fell in love with theater and started an amateur theater company in our faculty, and from then on I started to notice the importance of art as a social and emotional tool for change. Next, in my BA paper I attempted to use an application of Joseph Campbell’s monomyth on 20th-century British dystopias to understand if there is room for heroes in a hopeless society. These two important landmarks in my life taught me that culture, on one hand, is a very important part of who we are and, more importantly, of a better us that we can discover through art. On the other hand, it taught me how little I actually understand about art, history and culture and how uncritically I have been approaching everything. The cultural studies MA seemed to me the perfect place to start over and look at everything with new, critical glasses, and to turn myself into the kind of person that can have an impact on society through art.
