
■ Description
The Centre of Excellence for the Study of Cultural Identity (CESIC) is a research centre within the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Bucharest, founded in 2005 by Prof. Mihaela Irimia. CESIC is dedicated to the study of cultural identity, cultural history, the history of ideas/intellectual history, and cultural studies, with a focus on the British space and the comparative study of British (English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh), American, Romanian and Eastern European cultural phenomena. The main areas of scholarly interest studied at CESIC include: cultural specificity in historical and local contexts; cultural representations, practices, and institutions; cultural transformation, transmission, and exchange between Britain and other cultural spaces; British cultural institutions and cultural specificity; cultural hegemony, resistance, and dynamics of power; ideas in and throughout history; modernity and postmodernity; postcolonialism and postcommunism; multiculturalism and globalization; high culture and pop culture; cultural translation and adaptation; feminism and gender studies; identity politics and intersectionality; and more. The centre is located at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures (Pitar Moș St. 7-13, 1st floor, the British Cultural Studies room—formerly Leon Levițchi room), where the vast majority of CESIC events and research activities are held. In terms of infrastructure, the centre is equipped with 1 smart TV, 1 computer, 1 printer, 1 laptop, 1 overhead projector, and 1 portable projector. The centre boasts a library of over 5000 volumes on literary theory and criticism, cultural and intellectual history, and cultural studies.
